Indices

An index is a tool for tracking the performance of a certain collection of assets in a consistent manner. The performance of a group of securities meant to mirror a particular market segment is often measured through indexes. The Standard & Poor’s 500 (S&P 500) or Dow Jones Industrial Average (DJIA) are examples of broad indexes that cover the whole market. Other examples of more specialised indexes include those that follow a specific industry or market segment. Other financial or economic indicators, such as interest rates, inflation, or manufacturing production, are also measured by indices.

Why Indices

Most likely, you lack the time necessary to fully analyse the stock market. Even if you do, you might not have the knowledge to execute it. Even if you do, it can be difficult for you to muster the patience to sort through the more than 2000 stocks listed on, for instance, the two most important stock exchanges in the world: the New York Stock Exchange (NYSE) and the London Stock Exchange (LSE). But who is to say that you must have the time, knowledge, and persistence to do it? If you have always believed that you must, we are pleased to inform you that you need not, and you can thank indices trading for this.
